On February 26, 2022, members, veterans, and partners of the Each One Teach One Foundation (EOTOF) gathered in Soweto for our General Assembly Meeting. The atmosphere was charged with solidarity and purpose as we reflected on our journey, rooted deeply in the principles of the Freedom Charter, and looked toward the future of community transformation.
Originally established in May 2012, our foundation was built on a powerful promise: to address the social, economic, and educational plights still impacting Soweto communities due to the long-term legacy of apartheid. As former members, activists, and leaders of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) up to 1990, this assembly was not just a formal meeting—it was a powerful reminder of our shared history and our ongoing duty to our community.
Carrying the Torch of Activism
Guided by our core motto, "Each One Teach One: Preserving Our Heritage," the General Assembly highlighted how we are actively transforming the invaluable lessons of the liberation struggle into practical, uplifting community programs.
Our mission remains clear and unwavering:
- Preserving Liberation Heritage: We continue to safeguard the history of youth activism through oral history documentation, book writing, and commemorative events , ensuring the sacrifices made for our freedom are never forgotten.
- Advancing Education: True to our roots, we believe education is the ultimate tool for social transformation. From academic support and digital literacy (4IR) training to honoring top-performing matriculants in Soweto schools, we are investing heavily in our youth.
- Socio-Economic Empowerment: We are actively fighting unemployment and poverty by driving vocational training, entrepreneurship incubation, and agricultural projects to build self-reliant communities.
A Unified Democratic Structure
A major focal point of the assembly was looking at our growing organizational footprint. Operating through eight dedicated Chapters spread across various areas of Soweto , EOTOF ensures that local community needs are identified and met directly on the ground.
With each Chapter electing a representative to our Board of Directors , we continue to model a transparent, accountable, and democratic governance system that stays true to the values we fought for.
Looking Ahead Together
The assembly reinforced that our work is a collaborative, intergenerational effort. While our foundation is anchored by former student activists , we are incredibly proud to welcome strategic partners, volunteers, and the younger generation of leaders who share our vision. By working hand-in-hand with local schools, corporate partners, and fellow liberation organizations like the June 16 Foundation, we are building a stronger support network for former COSAS members and the vibrant youth of Soweto.
Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, and shared their collective wisdom. Together, we are ensuring that the legacy of youth activism continues to build a prosperous, informed, and self-reliant South Africa
